Prof. Katsumi Hattori

Prof. Katsumi Hattori (Hattori Katsumi) is a prominent Japanese geophysicist specialising in earthquake-related electromagnetic phenomena, ionospheric signals and crust–atmosphere–ionosphere coupling. Holding the position of Professor in the Earth Sciences Division of the Graduate School of Science at Chiba University, he also serves as Director of the university’s Center for Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS).

Prof. Hattori earned his Doctor of Engineering degree from Nagoya University in 1992 after completing his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Engineering there. His early academic appointments included a Research Associate at Toyama Prefectural University (1992-1995), Lecturer at Gunma National College of Technology (1995-1997), followed by roles as Associate Professor at Chiba University’s Marine Biosystems Research Center (2001-2006) and then in the Faculty of Science (2006-2007). He became full Professor in July 2009.

His research spans signal processing and image processing techniques applied to geophysical systems, electromagnetic monitoring of crustal deformation, real time earthquake forecasting systems, and ionospheric/atmospheric precursors of large earthquakes. He has published extensively (over 190 papers) and holds an h-index and D-index that place him among the top worldwide scientists in Earth Science fields.
