Prof.dr.ing. C.M. Hein

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft)

    Professor Dr.-Ing. Carola Hein is a distinguished scholar and thought leader in the field of architecture, urban planning, and heritage studies. She serves as Professor of History of Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands, and also holds appointments at Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam. She is the UNESCO Chair for “Water, Ports and Historic Cities,” a position that underscores her global leadership in integrating cultural heritage, sustainability, and spatial planning. Her research explores the long-term socio-spatial development of port cities, focusing on the interactions between water, ports, and urban environments. As the founder and director of the international research program PortCityFutures,
    Prof. Hein brings together interdisciplinary expertise to study the governance, design, and resilience of port–city regions in historical and contemporary contexts. Prof. Hein has authored and edited numerous books, journal articles, and chapters on topics related to architectural history, planning theory, and urban heritage. Her works, such as Resilience and Path Dependence: A Comparative Study of the Port Cities of London, Hamburg, and Philadelphia, have provided influential insights into how historical processes shape the evolution and adaptability of urban systems.
